Our very first Car of the Week was officially announced…today. The third generation Ford GT, following the original Sixties GT40 and 2004-’06 GT, debuted in Detroit as a 2017 model, starting production in just over 18 months.
In between the Flexes and Tempos, Ford has this amazing history of building completely insane cars for the street, like the Mustang Cobra R, Raptor or even Focus ST, so we shouldn’t be surprised when they build another one. But even for them, the 2017 GT is over the top.
Because even performance cars have to look environmental, it won’t come with anything like the 550hp supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 of the previous GT. This one will have an EcoBoost V-6. A SIX HUNDRED PLUS horsepower twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6. Oh yeah, and the rumor is that like the original–which crushed Ferrari at LeMans–they’ll be taking it racing.
If you look at the interior you’ll see it’s almost stark and bare. Most controls, including the paddle-shifted seven-speed transaxle, are F1-style on the steering wheel. There aren’t even any stalks for signals or lights. It’s got ceramic brakes, carbon seat frames, active suspension and if you look a little more closely, single-pivot scissor doors.
Start working overtime, kids, because you’re going to want one of these. Or at least the upcoming 350hp Focus RS.
Every week I’ll be choosing a car from somewhere in the automotive universe that particularly appeals to me. At the end of each month, we’ll be asking you to vote on your favorite of those. The winners will go into SpeedList Car of the Year voting in December.
